First things first, let's clear up any confusion about the name, as this might impact the information you find online when you are doing your wedding research! Majorca is the British spelling of the Spanish word Mallorca, and in Spanish two "lls" represent the sound 'y'.
You'll generally find most people increasingly use the Spanish spelling Mallorca, so when you're Googling, use this spelling to get the most accurate results!
As for how to pronounce it (we all know how awkward that can be!), it's pronounced 'My-orca'! So, now we've got that one cleared up, and seeing as you asked, let's get down to the nitty gritty about getting married in Majorca. We'll leave the spelling as it is in this article as it'll help more people like you find it on Google!
Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and the 7th largest island in the Mediterranean. It’s an island of great beauty and diversity, with mountains, turquoise waters, rolling hills, nature, wildlife, culture, art, and incredible food. The peak time for weddings in Majorca is May to October, which is in line with the most popular times to visit. The winters in Majorca are milder than the UK; however, while the sun is often shining, rain and wind are not unusual. June and September are the most popular months for weddings, so plan well in advance if you wish to marry at these peak times!
As long-time residents, we love the spring and autumn here - the sun is most often shining, the air is warm but not hot and humid, and the island is quieter than in the peak season. Consider the shoulder months of April and October for your Majorca wedding to avoid the crowds and intense heat. The weather is hottest mid-July to mid-August and this can impact wedding day plans, but we are very well-versed in planning and overseeing weddings in the heat, so if sun is your thing, don't let the warmer months put you off! If you want to marry in the glorious heat of the summer, think shade, breeze, fans, and sunsets. A late afternoon ceremony lends itself nicely to the Spanish culture of a later evening meal and dancing into the night!
We’ve been planning weddings in Mallorca for almost 10 years and know every venue on the island intimately. Your choice of Mallorca wedding venues is vast and caters almost to every taste and every budget, but it helps to have a clear idea about how you want your wedding day to look, and what you (and your guests!) need from your wedding venue.
Most of our couples are destination brides, and we completely empathize with the difficulty in trying to decide and organize all that goes into planning a wedding in Mallorca or Spain from the UK!
Majorca is a single direct flight away from the UK and there are daily direct flights from most major UK airports. In April, there are on average 16 flights per day out of London, from morning till night. This increases to an average of 33 in August. But it’s not just London that you can fly directly from - in June there are an average of 9 direct flights a day from Manchester and 3 from Belfast, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Dublin. In total, there are over 400 direct flights per day from the 6 major airports to Aeropuerto Palma de Majorca! If booked in advance these flights don’t cost the earth, so again, plan ahead as much as possible if you want lots of family and friends at your wedding - the same goes, of course, for hotels and AirBnBs; the best of which get snapped up early.
90% of the destination weddings in Majorca and throughout Spain are civil blessings rather than legal marriages. The conversion from one to the other is a simple process performed at a registry office in your hometown. We create a ceremony here for all your friends and family to witness, and they won't know it's not the real paperwork-perfect deal - there will be vows, rings exchanged, the kiss, readings, signing of the certificate, confetti - the whole shebang! All conducted by a professional celebrant. Of course, if you are an EU citizen, getting married in Majorca is less complex than if you are British (thanks, Brexit!). For Brits, if one of you has been a resident or citizen for more than 2 years, you can legally marry in Majorca, and this also applies to same-sex couples. Otherwise, allow us to plan your dream wedding here, and worry about the official stuff when you get home! If you are particularly concerned about this, we can put you in touch with brides who have gone through the process to set your mind at ease. Roman Catholics (as long as one of you is a Roman Catholic) can marry in Majorca, regardless of residency status, as long as it’s in a church - we have an amazing English-speaking Priest who is adored by our couples!
And now the serious stuff is out of the way, here's the best bit for any would-be bride - wedding venues in Majorca - but where to begin?! First things first, what type of wedding do you want? Big and showy, small and intimate, country, city, sea views, etc? How many people do you want there (or can you afford)? What budget do you have to work with? Have a think about these things and then review our Venues page for more information. If you have no idea and just need help, please call us - we know every venue on the island and are experts at matching venues to couples! Other than the aesthetics associated with a venue, it’s important to consider if your location suits the needs of you and your guests. Is there a need to be near the airport for a must-attend guest who is flying in late? How close to the wedding venue do you want your guests to be staying? Will you be providing transport? Would you prefer that you and your guests are staying at the wedding venue? Both venues and suppliers can be extremely busy in the high season, so consider whether it is worth marrying out of peak season as they will be less busy and possibly offer better value for money. There are 5 main categories of venues to consider: Fincas, Hotels, beach clubs/restaurants, villas, and historical buildings such as castles and museums.
